4/10, 8 PM @ Princeton University: World Premiere of Emma O’Halloran’s “Sum of its Parts” for tenor sax and stereo playback
I’m excited to premiere Sum of its Parts, a fantastic tenor sax/tape piece by Emma O’Halloran. Back in 2014, Emma wrote Night Music for my group, the PRISM Quartet, when we were in residence at Princeton. Night Music was an instant hit with PRISM members, so we recorded it for an upcoming release on XAS Records, and frequently perform it on tour. I eventually reached out to Emma about writing a solo piece. A few month’s ago, Emma recorded me playing a whole range of musical ideas, from resonant multiphonics to microtonal improvisations. She used this material to create a mind-bending playback part to accompany my live tenor sax. It’s great fun to play along with an electronic collage of yourself. The piece has a lot of space for improvisation, which will allow me to develop new ideas with every performance.
The concert is free, and includes music and a performance by Rudresh Mahanthappa as well. Complete info at http://www.princetonsoundkitchen.org/
