Sum of Its Parts Released October 9th on XAS
Sum of Its Parts, my premiere recording of music for tenor sax and electronics by Emma O’Halloran (title track) and Jacob Walls (Frayed), will be released on Friday, October 9th on the PRISM Quartet’s XAS label.
Join us for a pre-release Facebook Live broadcast on Monday, October 5th at 6:00 pm in which acclaimed music critic Steve Smith (Night After Night), who contributed liner notes to the EP, interviews me, Emma, and Jacob.
These two works are the first in a series written for me in which the composers record and synthesize elements of my own performance practice – from subtones and percussive articulation to growls, multiphonics, and microtones – to form a soundtrack of otherworldly electronic textures for my live tenor sax. Both allow for improvisation, which lets me contribute my own ideas to the compositions. I like the idea of working with composers to explode my approach to the instrument through electronics in a way that is not otherwise possible, even with multiple live saxes.
